| Green Park Station, originally called Queen Square Station, opened in 1870 as the terminus of a ten-mile branch from the Midland Railway’s main Bristol to Birmingham line. Somerset and Dorset Railway Company also used the station, providing a through service from the North down to Bournemouth via a superb scenic route over the top of the Mendips.
The station continued in constant use through the re-grouping of the entire rail system in 1923 and the formation of British Rail in 1948.
With a large increase in holiday makers during the late 40s and early 50s, the station became a mecca for railway enthusiasts as few other places were used by such a diverse range of steam trains.
However, the station was closed in 1966 and then tragically allowed to slowly fall into disrepair.
Between 1981 - 1982 the attractive Georgian style station buildings were restored to their original condition by J Sainsbury plc, and Green Park Station is still much admired as an outstanding example of mid-Victorian railway architecture. |
